INTRODUCTION OF SOIL

“Soil” is the outer layer of the earth. The word “Soil” is derived from Latin word Solium. Generally, soil have different meaning based on different profession. Dr. Karl Terzaghi. who is also known as the Father of Soil Mechanics.

•  As per geologist Earth crust to be consider as unconsolidated materials know a regolith or mantle.

•   As per agronomist the layer of earth which support the growth of the plants or helpful to raising of crops.

•   Soil” in soil engineering is told as  Composed of solid particles,  Produced by the disintegration of rocks,  Produced by weathering of rocks. An unconsolidated material, Decomposition of organic matters. The soil particles may contain organic / Inorganic matter, The void space between the particles may contain air, water or both.

It is the application of the  laws of mechanics and hydraulics dealing     engineering problems.   Deals with the action of various  forces on soil    and with the flow of water and air in soil.	It is an applied science    dealing with the applications of principles of soil mechanics, characteristics of soil  to practical problems.      It includes site investigations, design construction, foundations,  earth structures	It is the branch which is related with Soil Engineering , Geology , and rock mechanics.
